Two major points (my opinion) in Lisa's text are:

1. http://www.johnnybunko.com/ Mr. Daniel H. Pink's career-advice comic-book approach that teaches six lessons of life. ("It's not about you", "There is no plan", etc.)

2. The complicated conclusion he tries to teach: "that work can be glorious but grinding, worthwhile and wretched, a place you can't wait to get to and can't wait to leave, something you love but hate to do. That also means students need to understand the fundamentals of budgeting, banking, saving and investment, Bernanke said.
''It is also essential that you know how to use -- properly and responsibly -- the many types of credit that will be at your disposal, such as credit cards,'' he added.
In pushing this cause, Bernanke picked up one of the passions of predecessor Alan Greenspan.
A nationwide survey last year found that on average, high school seniors got a flunking grade when it came to financial literacy. They answered correctly only 52.4 percent of questions about personal finance and economics. The survey, sponsored by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, was released by the Federal Reserve.
The dismal results of the survey underscored the need for students to improve their financial know-how.
''As you think about your future, don't forget the importance of financial literacy,'' Bernanke told the students.
In his remarks, he did not talk about the future course of interest rates in the United States or the state of the economy.
Many economists believe the Federal Reserve next month will keep a key interest rate at 5.25 percent, where it has been since last June. Before taking a break, the Fed had steadily boosted rates for two years to fend off inflation.

Preparing For The Worst (you are mortal, you know)

According to GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, March 2007, page 32, there are steps we as parents should take to prepare our children for personal disaster.

What information will your child need if you aren't always there? Make an inventory list for your children of all:

financial accounts

insurance policy numbers and claim phone numbers (home owners & medical)

doctor/dentist contacts

other relevant information

Some other "what to do" basics to cover with your children:

What about any safe deposit boxes?

Where are extra house keys? (at neighbors? on the premises?)

Who will your child go to if not to you?

Do they know how to contact their guardians?

Where is your will located?

What do they do if there is a fire in the night?

The more you think about, the more important all the data becomes to your children when you are no longer there to protect them. Have a family meeting soon. Train them on what to do. Damn the torpedos and the impediments.

Some graduates have found that dealing with the resultant debt (through student loans & credit cards) can really bite them, especially if finding a paying job proves slow after graduation. With little other choice, they move back in with parents, and do their best to live within a budget while fighting their way out of debt. The WASHINGTON POST had an article on this, Boomerang Generation, and here is the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/02/AR2006090200093.html Low paying starter jobs, little in savings, high acquired debt, and educational expenses conspire against their dreams.

Be vigilant in your financial choices. I am not saying it is easy. I am passing on words of wisdom from my old calculus professor, Dr. Travis, "Make clever choices".

May you win.

Kudos to People Taking Action to Help Students

TutorVista, a Bangalore-based tutoring company, is providing a year of free tutoring to kids in the 10 poorest rural counties in the U.S. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1226166,00.html They are helping to provide the promised tutoring of No Child Left Behind, the tutoring that "80% of the kids entitled to after-school tutoring - at taxpayer expense - aren't getting", this according to the Time article quoting a new government report.

Parade Magazine discusses 5 communities taking action to improve the children's quality of education. http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2006/edition_08-27-2006/Better_Schools It's an inspiration to each of us --- are we truly involved or just paying lip service?

Do a small thing today, each day, to help mentor a child in your periphery. Her gimme's are a great time to remind her to do her chores, to earn her allowance, and to save her money. Her piggy bank has 4 slots (donate, save, spend and invest). To differentiate between "save" and "invest", try "you save for a new bike or a new skateboard", and "you invest for your college, your house, your car----when you are older". I use the analogy of planting an acorn and watching the tree grow for "invest".

To teach a child self-control, self-discipline in spending, to choose delayed gratification: these are important life-long benefits for their young souls. I refer you to one of my favorite recent Saturday editorials by David Brooks, THE NEW YORK TIMES, "Marshmallows and Public Policy", and here's the link:

http://select.nytimes.com/gst/tsc.html?URI=http://select.nytimes.com/2006/05/07/opinion/07brooks.html&OQ=_rQ3D1&OP=3ea63c3Q2FQ26Q20.dQ26ioQ7E--iQ26m@@LQ26@PQ26@hQ26-Q51wQ5Dw-Q5DQ26@hdQ7E--Ooqci!Q5C

You have to register for Times Select to get the whole article----sorry about that. He discusses how we as adults can affect educational policy, to encourage our children to learn self-control, and how we must teach this repeatedly and by example.

Who's The Adult Here?

Funny that as long as I keep MY sense of humor and "adult" prospective, I can instruct and lead children toward good choices. If I get emotional, if I get involved personally (bent out of shape), my leadership starts to go down the toilet and the teachable moment is lost. It does no good to get mad back, to lose your cool, to start to negotiate consequences. The consequences must be laid out beforehand, with full disclosure, and they are irrevocably what they are.

Ever tried to negotiate with a mad kid? Ever win such a negotiation?

Who's the adult here?

Listening with respect

Do you appreciate how smart our kids are?

I'm not so sure that we adults are good enough listeners to the young ones in our lives. The more I listen, truly listen, to my daughter, the more she sparkles, and amazingly exceeds my expectations.

So, try that today. Listening is an act of love and respect. Resist adding your 2 cents worth---don't 1-up anyone----just listen. It's very powerful.

Let me know how it works out.
